Prior to A New DirectionEdit
Derek is Drew's older brother, and grew up with the same family and same background. However, Derek is very different from his brother- He is much more manly and athletic, and tends to me brawns whereas Drew is brains. Although he is his own person and doesn't think about it too much, Derek has grown up in his older sister's and younger brother's shadow, so he has gotten a bit jealous and bitter towards the rest of his family. While Derek's family just assumes he has become a mean person, Derek is actually torn up inside. He is jealous and sad because his sister is very good at singing and his brother is exceptionally smart, and knows they both have their careers set out for them, but Derek has no clue about who he will turn out to be and thinks he will be a lowlife. Instead of telling his family about this, he just focuses his life on his social life and sports (he is one of the best players on the football team, but doesn't think he has the potential to make it big). Derek (like his sister and brother) also has an extreme singing talent, but doesn't realize this because he only ever sings in the shower or alone in the car.
At first glance, Derek is a stereotypical jock. He is cocky, loud, athletic, good-looking, and appears to have no care in the world. While he isn't a straight-up bully, Derek sometimes teases some of his less popular and "weirder" classmates. Around his family, Derek tends to alienate himself and often makes fun of his younger siblings. However, underneath this all, Derek is really just a confused but cool guy. He can be really nice and funny, and actually cares about who he will end up being when he grows up.
